Background tasks

Work your Gluon keeps going after a reply ends: delegated tasks, timed waits and webhook callbacks, the Tasks panel, approvals, stopping and results.

Some work outlives a single reply. Your Gluon can start it, end its reply, and pick the results up when they’re ready, while you keep chatting.

Kind Started when Gluon… Ends when
Delegated task hands work to one of your agents, a copy of itself or Research the task finishes
Wait needs to check back later, such as “check the status again in an hour” the time comes
Callback gives an outside service a one-time web address to report back to the service calls it, or it expires

Only your Gluon starts background work; custom agents don’t.

A finished result doesn’t interrupt anything. When the chat is free, Gluon collects every result ready at that moment, shows a “Background activity updated” divider, and replies with what came back. Results are treated as information from the task, never as your instructions.

  • Each piece of work shows as a row in the chat with its status (Running, Needs you, Finished, Stopped, Failed or Timed out), a timer and its latest step.
  • The strip above the message box counts open work, such as “Waiting on 2 tasks · 1 timer”, and offers Stop all.
  • The side panel’s Tasks tab lists Active, Finished (in the last day) and earlier work. Open a delegated task to read the full instruction, its activity and its result, or open its full page.
  • Stop a single task from its row or page. Stopping the reply with the composer’s Stop also stops background work; Steer doesn’t.

Stopping doesn’t undo what a task already did.

A delegated task follows your permissions like any chat. When it reaches a tool set to Ask, it waits: the approval appears in its row in the Tasks tab, on its page and in Needs you, with a notification.

Background work your Gluon starts from a group shows only to you, in that group’s Tasks tab. The group owner also sees other members’ running work, with its title and status but not its results, and can stop it.

  • Waits and callbacks last from 1 minute to 7 days. You can have up to 10 open at once in a chat.
  • A callback accepts one delivery of up to 64 KiB; Gluon reads its first 8,000 characters.
  • Delegated tasks can’t ask you questions, hand a browser to you, or be continued; see Delegation.
  • Finished tasks stay viewable for a week.
  • Deleting a chat stops its background work.
